Get in Shape at Chicken Camp
If you’ve never done much free shaping, or if you have trouble getting independent behavior, this is a great crash course in how to shape successfully.
Terry Ryan’s Legacy Canine Training, in Sequim, Washington, is now hosting the chicken training camps originally developed by Marian and Bob Bailey. This two-hour DVD is edited down from a five-day chicken camp. In the first hour you’ll see people learning the basic mechanical skills of clicker training and how to handle their hens. Then they learn to train simple targeting and discriminations.
The second half is devoted to shaping. You’ll see class members learning to train chickens to do mini-agility obstacles (including contacts and weave poles) and many other behaviors. The editing clearly shows us the progression of various shapers, from first attempts through intermediate criteria to the final performance. Teacher Lisa Dilling is a whiz at explaining the ins and outs of free shaping, including what not to do: don’t wave the target around or poke it at the chicken to get it to peck. “If you’re working harder than the chicken, you’re doing it wrong; let the chicken do the work!”
