The Tug-a-Jug is a clever, quite wonderful new boredom buster for your dog. Put some favorite treats in the jug and let her at it.
The Tug-a-Jug is a clear, super hard, nontoxic plastic “jug” designed to dispense treats to your dog as she works for them. Scent holes at the bottom of the jug get your dog interested in the toy. Because it’s clear, she can see them, too. A chew rope inserted in the mouth of the jug keeps the treats in or lets them out, depending on its position. A textured rubber ball is also wrapped around the jug’s mouth; this prevents the plastic bottle from cracking at the mouth end where it is most vulnerable and also adds diversion as a chew toy.
Treats are easy to put in the Tug-a-Jug through a large-capacity, screw-off cover at the bottom. Any treat small enough to make it through the neck of the jug will work just fine (for example Charlee Bear, Kong Tots, Bravo Bonus Bites). We like to mix multiple treats in the jug. Washing the jug is easy, too because of the screw-off bottom.
Our Review:
Our four-legged and two-legged product testers really liked the Tug-a-Jug. The large capacity jug is one major reason. Many boredom busters have a much smaller capacity for holding treats. The Tug-a-Jug eliminates the problem of having to frequently refill the toy. The scent holes are another excellent addition. It was great fun to watch our dogs “learn” that while the scent was at one end, getting the treats out required working at the other end! Our four-legged testers stayed engrossed with the toy for a good long time (30 minutes or more).
The level of treats you put in or that are left in the jug can significantly impact the rate of reinforcement. When the jug has a good number of treats in it and is tipped over on its side, treats slide to the top. This makes the rate of reinforcement high because a small push on the toy releases treats. When the number of treats in the jar diminishes it will take your dog more work to dislodge them. This isn’t necessarily an undesirable feature, but your dog may lose interest if the level of reinforcement falls off too rapidly. On the other hand, she may very well be up for the increased challenge as she learns she has to work harder for reinforcement.
Because the jug is a hard plastic, it’s going to make some noise if its rolling around on a hardwood floor. Also, the manufacturer warns that a dog could put the rope toy in her mouth and then wildly swing the jug from side to side, breaking your favorite porcelain vase! So, know your dog.
